How to Tell When an Atmospheric Water Generator Filter Is Spent

The short answer

For the LifeWell S20, replace the water-filter set every six months or when the water-filter indicator lights—whichever happens first. After installing the new filters, hold the water-filter reset button for two seconds.

Those are more reliable signals than appearance, taste, odor, water flow or daily production. A cartridge can look clean after its scheduled service interval, while a change in taste or flow can have causes unrelated to the filters.

What “spent” means for an AWG filter

An atmospheric water generator uses separate air-handling and water-filtration components. In the LifeWell S20, incoming air first passes through a medium-efficiency air filter. Collected water then passes through PAC, ultrafiltration and carbon block stages, followed by UVC treatment in the tank.

The six-month replacement instruction applies to the PAC, UF and carbon block water-filter set. The in-tank UVC treatment is a separate stage and is not one of the three replacement cartridges. The medium-efficiency air filter is also separate from the PAC + UF + CB set, so do not assume that every filter or component follows the same replacement procedure.

A filter reaching its scheduled replacement point does not necessarily produce an obvious visual change. Following the six-month interval and the machine’s water-filter indicator avoids relying on guesswork.

1. Six months have passed

Replace the PAC + UF + CB set every six months. Recording the installation date on your calendar or maintenance log makes this easier to track, especially if the indicator is reset after a filter change.

2. The water-filter indicator lights

Replace the set when the water-filter indicator lights, even if you believe six months have not passed. After replacement, press and hold the water-filter reset button for two seconds.

Resetting the indicator without changing the filters is not a substitute for replacement. Conversely, failing to reset it after installing the set can leave you without an accurate maintenance prompt. Signs that deserve attention but do not prove the filter is spent

Several changes may prompt you to inspect the machine, but they should not replace the stated schedule.

• A change in taste or odor: Stop dispensing and investigate rather than assuming a new filter set will automatically resolve the issue. Confirm that the cartridges are correctly installed and contact LifeWell support if the change continues.
• Slower dispensing: Restricted flow may involve a cartridge, but it can also involve installation or another part of the water path. The S20’s stated dispensing rate is up to about 40 oz/min (1.2 L/min), so a persistent change warrants troubleshooting.
• Lower daily production: This is not, by itself, a reliable filter-life test. Atmospheric water generator output depends on air humidity and temperature and falls in dry or cold air. Changes in room conditions can therefore affect collection without indicating that the PAC, UF or carbon block cartridges are spent.
• A cartridge that looks discolored: Appearance alone cannot establish remaining service life. Replace according to the six-month interval or the water-filter indicator rather than waiting for a particular color.
• A leak or damaged cartridge: Turn off the unit and address the installation or damaged part. Do not continue operating merely because the six-month interval has not elapsed.

How to replace the set without losing track of the schedule

Before starting, confirm that the package is the LifeWell A10 / S20 Replacement Filter Set (PAC + UF + CB). The S20 has three screw-in filter bottles in one bay under the top cover.

The LifeWell S20 is rated to produce up to 2.6 gallons (10 L) of drinking water a day at 86°F (30°C) and 80% relative humidity. Atmospheric water generator output depends on air humidity and temperature and falls in dry or cold air. The S20’s operating range is 41–90°F (5–32°C) and 35–90% relative humidity.

Because environmental conditions affect collection, a lower tank level does not automatically mean the water filters need replacement. Check the six-month interval and indicator first, then consider room temperature and humidity when evaluating production.
